KListen: Me’Shell NdegéOcello – “Leviticus: Faggot” (1996)

How could I not followup my KListen feature of Tracy Chapman with anyone other than Me’Shell NdegéOcello? And no not because they both dated the same woman (allegedly) but because they were both some of my earliest images of queer women of color.

Pastor James David Manning Homo demon ObamaI have been going back and forth in my head (and heart) trying to reconcile the relationship between the Black church and the LGBT community.

When I see pastors  twisting the word of God to intentionally inflict pain and cause division among their flock, it hurts me.  When I don’t see enough people fighting against it, it scares me.

Out of nowhere this song came to mind, I can’t believe (well actually I can) that 20 years later we are still having this same conversation. We are still afraid to love our own children… I think I am going back to my pondering but until then check it out here.

Enjoy…

Know anyone else we should feature? Let us know.

  1. I remember the stir this song caused in the music world. I never really considered how this affected Black Christians even though at the time I was attending church regularly. Now that I don’t really go to church or see myself as a practicing Christian, I feel more spiritually in tune than ever. Maybe it’s the way the church has become more outspoken on LGBT issues and not in a good way. Isn’t one of Christ’s most recognizable themes Love and Acceptance? The church doesn’t always remember to practice that tenet.
Thank you for the brain tickle this morning!
