Queen Latifah stars in HBO’s Bessie Smith Biopic

queenlatifah2First let’s be clear Queen Latifah has been on the K Word #WCE list FOREVER1.

We loved Khadijah. We loved Cleo. Hell, even Big Mama Morton could have got it back in the day.

Wait what were we talking about? Oh yeah.

Well the beautiful and talented Dana Owens is at it again with the upcoming HBO Biopic Bessie. The Queen plays the lead in the drama about Bessie Smith,  nicknamed the Empress of the Blues.

For those that need a little info on the epicness of this project and the woman it revolves around, Bessie Smith was simply… a boss. She was a legendary singer during the 1920s and the 1930s. She is often regarded as one of greatest artists of the era.

ismithi001p1Though there isn’t a set release date, we are sitting here ready for it. The idea that we might see Queen Latifah in some good ol fashioned girl-on-girl action alone has us stalking HBO’s page2.

BESSIE is directed by filmmaker Dee Rees from a screenplay by Rees, Christopher Cleveland and Bettina Gilois. The film is also rounded out by a star-studded cast including Michael Kenneth Williams, Khandi Alexander, Mike Epps, Tika Sumpter, Tory Kittles, Oliver Platt, Bryan Greenberg, with Charles S. Dutton and Mo’Nique.

  1. Well technically not forever since instagram has only been around 5 minutes but you get our drift.
  2. Bessie Smith was a pretty well documented bisexual.

  1. This should be interesting. I know at some point in the Queen’s career she started to release albums of her signing and doing her jazz thing. I’m sure she’ll do a fantastic job in the biopic. I must see this.

      1. She sure does. I remember she tried to come out with her music on BET and do the music videos, but I’m not sure if a lot of people was receptive to that. Honestly, I like her all around. Good actress, still a mean lyricist and a helluva singer. I just want her one time for old time sake go back to her old style of dress. Back when she’s fighting the power and all for the cause (not to say she isn’t now).
