Life without the Planet: KWord Guide to Lesbian @Meetup Groups

Gay MeetupAs most of us know, in the last few years, the lesbian “scene” has shifted from a familial/clannish one to one heavily integrated** into the mainstream. Long gone are the good old days of a lesbian bar. Kit has probably sold the Planet, Maud’s has had its last call, and the Palms… ok well it is still around. Scratch the Palms.

For many of us, if you want to meet a nice lezzie (or two) you have to hit up one of the monthly events by your local lesbian promoter, or put your networking skills on hyperdrive at annual events like Pride, Her WinterParty, Sweet Heat or Aqua Girl. You could be like me and start your own dinner club with likeminded lesbians… but there has to be another way right? It’s the digital age, how do we find fellow digital lezzies?

As an answer to those questions, it seems like  meetup.com has turned into lesbianmeetup.com (literally lesbian.meetup.com). There are over a thousand lesbian meetup groups around the world, from Sapphic Adventures in Chicago to Gay Geek Meetups in the UK.

So the question shifts from, how do I find lesbian groups to how do I find the right lesbian groups for me? We came up with a couple of tips for you.

Out and About: #LadyFestMiami VIP Reception

LadyFest Miami is a DIY (do-it-yourself) festival organized and run by volunteers made by and for women: trans folks, LGB people, straight women, kinksters, people of color, immigrants, genderqueer, queer, and their allies.

The goal of the grassroots organization is to unite, engage, and empower our local community, build a sustainable community and celebrate diversity by creating a space for education, transformative dialogue, art, and cultural expression. LadyFest is open and inviting to everyone, of all ages and backgrounds.

To kick off the first event and showcase a taste of what LadyFest Miami had to offer, they held a VIP reception at O Cinema in Wynwood on Wednesday, March 26. We were honored to be among those they invited.

Level Ground Film Festival (Pasadena) – The world’s first faith-based LGBT film festival

This is another bit of information that was shared with us. We are passing it along to those who may be interested. We are not affiliated with them whatsoever.

Drawing  its name from the Bible, specifically Isaiah 40:3-5– the Level Ground film festival, bills itself as “the world’s first faith-based LGBT film festival”. In its second year, the 11 day festival will bring panels, screenings, talks and social events to various small Pasadena venues now through March 1st.

The mission of the festival according to their website is:

Level Ground uses art to create safe space for dialogue about faith, gender, and sexuality. Our hope is to cultivate a better way of speaking with one another across our differences and disagreements. Level Ground is becoming a national innovator in film festival programming, art curation, and dialogue.

Launch of the Lesbians of Color Dinner Series #LOC

For those who know me on a non-virtual level (I was going to say a personal level… but yeah anyone that reads this blog knows me quiiiite personally *shrugs*) I have been going on and on about the launch of my newest project, the Lesbians of Color Dinner Series. The last Saturday of the month, dynamic lesbians of color from all over South Florida get together to dish, eat, and network. I would include sip but if it is something I am a part of, that should be pretty obvious.

So Saturday was our first dine. It was AMAZING! No, I’m not just saying that because I was the host. The theme of my dinner was a Wine and Tapas Soiree (with a little/lot of Sangria) too.  We ended up with 16 [insert another word for amazing] women, 20 bottles of wine, 3 gallons of sangria and only 2 broken glasses. We got little snapshots into each other’s lives and wow what lives we live. Let’s just say I didn’t think I would be hearing about someone sewing a man’s fingers back on after an accident, or that I would be preparing to ride (read: watch others ride) in a 100ish mile bike ride supporting the less fortunate.  We were regaled with singing, played an epic game of Celebrity and did a LOT of late night dancing in the dark. I would go on and on, but I guess pictures will have to say the remaining thousand words.

Special shout out of course to KP for being the Robin to my Batman (though we aren’t in ANY pictures together.. IJS)
