Something Like A Super Lesbian: @Martina Navratilova

Martina-Navratilova-1978-WimbledonBefore there was a Jason Collins…. Before there was a Britney Griner… there was our newest inductee to the League of Extraordinary Lesbians, and one of the best tennis players of all time, Martina Navratilova.

Navratilova dominated Women’s professional tennis for over a decade. She’s won 18 Grand Slam singles titles, 31 major women’s doubles titles (an all-time record), and 10 major mixed doubles titles. I could go on and on about her titles and accomplishments but that’s what Wikipedia is for. But it’s pretty safe to say she meets the criteria of an athlete [check].

Martina came out publicly as a lesbian back in 1981…. yes 1981. Let’s put this in perspective, in 1981 Jason Collins was sitting in diapers, and Britney… Well Britney wasn’t even a twinkle her father’s eye.

Did I mention she even dated another 80s celezbrity Rita Mae Brown (yes the one who wrote Rubyfruit Jungle)? That’s pretty gay to us [check check].

1_1328753439_1328753447_640x640Martina, you might not be a super lesbian but you are definitely something like it… from your dominance on the court and your fearlessness in your convictions you have been a shining example for professional athletes for over 30 years.

Something Like A Super Lesbian: Julie Mehretu

julie2

Our newest inductee to the League of Extraordinary Lesbians is Ethiopian-born artist, Julie Mehretu.

Best known for her large-scale abstract paintings, Mehretu’s Grey Area, itself composed of 6 large-scale paintings, was a featured exhibit at the Guggenheim in 2009. In 2010, she was commissioned by Goldman Sachs for a multi-million dollar, 80 foot mural for their Goldman Sachs Tower in downtown New York (which you can see from the street if you are in the area).

Today, her work can be found in various public and private collections around the United States and Europe. She is often named as one of the most critically acclaimed artists of our time, both nationally and internationally.

Mehretu shares her studio and life with her partner (and fellow artist), Jessica Rankin. The pair welcomed a new baby in 2011, joining their son, Haile.

julie-mehretuJulie, you might not be a super lesbian but you are definitely something like it… your ability to deconstruct our traditional view of structure and architecture and liberate us from its constraint is simply amazing.

To see more of her work, please visit her artist’s page at the artnet and read about her love story with Jessica on Out.com here.

Something Like A Super Lesbian: Jenna Lyons @jcrew

jenna-lyons-vogue1Happy humpday! I have kinda been sucking on my SLSL posts as of late. This is mostly because my Mac is one step from the Apple graveyard and it aggravates me to no end. I’m going to do better *big smile*.

To be honest it wasn’t until I was watching Mother O‘s “Where Are They Now?” that I was inspired (and reminded that I was past due on a post).

Our newest indoctorate to the League of Extraordinary Lesbians is actually a pretty new member of  the League of Any Kind of Lesbian, BUT THAT’S WHY WE LOVE HER. She is another shining example that goldstars are only important on preschool bulletin boards.  Yes we are talking about the fabulous Jenna Lyons (of whom I have intense ocular envy).

Jenna Lyons has been a fashion icon since joining J. Crew over 20 years ago. In a world of super models and super egos, Jenna’s charm and charisma has made her a leader of the pack. She has definitely elevated J. Crew to a power fashion house as its President and Executive Director. How high you ask? All the way to the top, as FLOTUS Michelle Obama is one of the brand’s biggest fans.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you know where you were with the lezzie proclamation heard round the fashion world was made… Okay maybe I am exaggerating a smidge but I was going for flare.  After 9 years of being married to ex husband Vincent, Lyons publicly acknowledged her relationship with Courtney Crangi (yep Philip Crangi‘s sister) at Glamour’s 2012 Women of the Year Awards.

Jenna and Solange *swoon*

The thing that I love most about Jenna is her style, her self assurance, and her ability to make it look effortless. She doesn’t try to explain herself or her relationship.

“When I was young and people judged me for things I had no control over, that was really hard, so I’m incredibly open to people doing whatever works for them,” she said. “It’s just as surprising to me as it probably is to everyone else. It certainly is strange to wake up, at 44, and look at the person next to you and think: ‘Oh! This wasn’t what I expected.’ But I don’t think love works that way, and I am O.K. with that.” Snagged from the NYT

Jenna, you might not be a super lesbian but you are definitely something like it… thank you for keeping us fabulous.

Shots! Shots! Shots! Shots Around Town: @HerWinterParty Runway Show

Kudos to the @HerWinterParty team for putting on an amazing kickoff event on Wednesday. Set at the gorgeous Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, it was a wonderful night of Grey Goose martinis, yummy bites from Chilis (I obviously have been selling them short) and GORGEOUS women. It was definitely the right start for the Her Winter Party festivities next month. I am already getting my outfits together. (Don’t judge me.)

Oh and for full disclosure purposes I am on the Her Winter Party committee… though I had nothing to do with the planning on this event.

ALL PICTURES WERE TAKEN WITH MY TRUSTY IPHONE Except for the ones I “borrowed” from the amazing Steve rothaus

10 Things To Know About: Najja Moon of the Andy Moon Collection

I haven’t done a “10 Things to Know About” feature in a very long time, mostly because I haven’t had anything new and exciting that has sparked my interest.

Enter Najja Moon of the Andy Moon Collection.

A few weeks back, I was sent a video of The Andy Moon Collection, and although there are no celestial references on the clothing itself, there are plenty ethereal unisex pieces that will have you seeing stars.

I immediately reached out to the owner/designer Najja Moon about the line and her philosophy of fashion. This is what she had to say…

With the Andy Moon Collection I wanted to address what, outside of functionality, it is about clothing that speaks to a more masculine or feminine aesthetic. I wanted to design a collection that was completely void of influences based on preconceived notions about gender. This collection is about a lifestyle. I’m wardrobing professional, creative, ambitious individuals. – Najja Moon

Check out the Q&A after the jump, plus images and a video of the new collection.
